Mining pit tragedy…
A French Geologist, who perished when the walls of a mining pit he was working in caved in around Friday midday last, will be buried in Guyana on a date to be announced.
Guy Gois, 56, of French Guiana, who was attached to the River Gold Guyana Inc, a mining company operating in the Konawaruk creek, was pronounced dead at the Mahdia Hospital hours after he was pulled from among the rubble.
Police have launched an investigation and are awaiting a post mortem examination to ascertain the cause of his death.
According to the police, their investigations have so far revealed that Gois was taking soil samples from an excavated pit at the company’s White Water Backdam, Konawaruk operations.
At the time it was raining heavily and it is reported that the pit caved in and trapped him underneath.
He was later taken out and conveyed to the Mahdia Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
His body was subsequently transported to the Lyken funeral home where it was positively identified by his wife, daughter and another relative who arrived from French Guiana yesterday.
The dead man’s wife was overwhelmed when she eventually saw his body in the morgue and had to be consoled by the relative.
This newspaper understands that Gois will be buried in Guyana since the cost to transport his body back home is very prohibitive.
A source told this newspaper that in order to transport the body back to French Guiana, it will first have to be embalmed in keeping with regulations laid down by the Ministry of Health.
Then there are two options; one is to fly the body to Europe, preferably France and then to French Guiana or to fly the body to Suriname from where it will be transported overland to Cayenne.
Both options carry a high cost.
