Dane ‘Spooky’ Blair found form on day-one of the 2009 Guyana National Rifle Association Fullbore Championship being contested at the Timehri Rifle Ranges, Yarrowkabra, to canter into the top spot ahead of a very experienced field.
In taking top honours after winning the 300 yard range with 35 points and 5 V Bulls recording the only possible of the day, Blair also won for the first time, the Valladares trophy for winning the 500 yards range tallying 49 points and 6 V Bulls. His overall tally for the day, which saw rain prolonging the completion of the 300 shoot, was 84 points and 11 V Bulls.
His performance was heart warming and very encouraging according to national captain Mahendra Persaud who placed second overall with 81 points and 7 V’s. Persaud took the runner up spot on a count back after the son and father combination of Dylan and Richard Fields also ended with similar stats. Dylan placed ahead of Richard.
During the first detail at 500 yards the elements from above wanted a piece of the action and came down at a steady rate but this did not dampen the spirits of the riflemen or their ammunition even though they were soaked by the end.
Enduring a torrid time on a rainy day was defending champion Ransford Goodluck and ACP Paul Slowe.
An exciting battle among the O’ Class shooters, who are classified as juniors, is developing. Charles Dean who took the runner up spot at both the 300 (31.0) and 500 (48.4) ranges, led overall with 81.4 after taking the one point per range given by Terry Stewart who is second with a total of 77.7, one V Bull ahead of Colin Loncke who ended with the same points.
The other O’ Class competitor, Peter Persaud, who enjoyed a handicap of two points per range, finished the day with an overall score of 43.2. Conditions on the day were overcast with the wind not paying a major role unlike the last championship and other competitions where it changed directions almost at will. The national captain summing up the day said he is pleased to see the likes of Blair stepping up and finding encouraging form which will serve Guyana well at the Caribbean Championships, which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from May 10-18.
The 900 yard shoot will now be contested on Saturday, day two of the three day competition along with the 300 and 600 yards.
