In response to the article, “Mother of slain police rank slams Police Force,” published in the Monday (March 30, 2009) edition of Kaieteur News, the police have issued a press release refuting certain points of the story.
In the said article, Doreen Glasgow, the mother of Police Constable 18682 Oslen Glasgow, who was killed in the line of duty at Cromarty Foreshore, Corentyne, on November 28, 2008, said that she was hardly satisfied with the way the Guyana Police Force treated her, in relation to the death of her son.
She also said that since her son died, she has not collected any of his benefits from the police.
According to the Guyana Police Force, when they received the news that Oslen had been shot and killed, the Divisional Commander Assistant Commissioner Krishna Lekhraj, “made every effort to personally contact Mrs. Doreen Glasgow in order to so inform her.”
“In the time it took Lekhraj to locate and go to Doreen’s residence in Fyrish, Corentyne, she had apparently already been “unofficially informed by some unknown person by way of a call on her cell phone.”
“After this, Lekhraj met Doreen at the hospital.
“The police press release said that Lekhraj “officially informed her of her son’s death and offered his sympathy on behalf of the Police Force.” At the same time, the police said that the Divisional Commander also told her that the Guyana Police Force would “stand all expenses for the funeral and all possible assistance in order for the family to receive whatever benefits they were entitled to.”
Further, the police said that all of the relevant documents have already been submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs, so that that ministry can begin to regulate the necessary payments.
“After the publication of the article in Kaieteur News, the Guyana Police Force made contact with Doreen, by way of Senior Superintendent Wreford Johnson. Doreen was apparently advised of the procedures necessary for her to obtain the $1 million that she was entitled to, due to her son’s death.
“She was advised to make contact with the Ministry of Home Affairs to ascertain the present position of these funds.
“At the same time, the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce donated a further $10,000 to Doreen. This was done on the reopening of the Felix Austin Police College at Adventure, Corentyne, on Friday March 27, 2009, for which she has expressed her sincere gratitude.
