Explorer, Charles Montier, and his two native Amerindian tour guides, Rupert Williams and Danny Daniels, of Chenapow Village have made history in Guyana for being the first team to successfully paddle the 140-mile Potaro River.
The 34-day voyage included 9 days of trekking, 11 days of paddling – crossing through 17 major rapids, hauling for 12 days, using of an outboard engine 3 days, and traversing 9 waterfalls including the majestic Kaieteur Falls, which is distinguished as the longest single drop (741 ft) waterfall in the world.
Not only did this trio successfully complete the expedition, they did so ahead of schedule. It was estimated that the trip would take 35 days but the team finished it in 34 beginning the journey on February 25 and concluding on April 1.
Montier, 23, of the United Kingdom says that he now wants to live and invest in Guyana.
“There is something about Guyana that makes you feel that you are doing something more interesting and different than the usual norm of traveling,” Montier said.
He added that the journey combined adventure and excitement. According to him, the people who helped him along the way made the trip more interesting.
Montier also said that the real attraction for him was getting a real touch of the wilderness noting that it is freedom with nature and the wilderness.
He believes that many more persons will come to Guyana to experience as he did since Guyana has a lot to offer.
Montier visited Minister of Tourism, Manniram Prashad, to provide an end of journey update.
Minister Prashad congratulated him for successfully pioneering this expedition noting that this will help to further promote adventure tourism in Guyana.
“We are happy that we had Charles Montier in Guyana…This is the type of tourism we want to promote – eco-tourism, adventure tourism so when people see this on the blogs internationally and in the newspapers they will become more aware about Guyana.”
The Minister said that the fact that Montier now wants to invest in Guyana is a very good sign.
“This is a first and we expect many more to come and do this trek…This expedition will be the start of many more because if he can do it many more will want to try to do it and we’re already having enquiries.”
Minister noted that Guyana is now rated as one of the top 35 wildlife destinations in the world.
According to him, Montier, he has discovered a special species of spider which will have to be confirmed by scientists. “All this is very exciting news for Guyana and tourism.”
MINTIC/GTA facilitated and supported the expedition, as it will help to boost the Guyana adventure tourism product.
Montier is an accomplished adventurer with a number of expeditions in Nepal, Peru and now Guyana.
He graduated from Bristol University in June 2008 where he was studying economics.
