The Guyana/USA Soccer League will kick off their 2009 season on Wednesday April 8th under lights at Aviator Sports Complex at the Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, New York.
In its second season, the league will feature both former and current Guyana national players, among them will be Jermaine Smart, Jermaine Scott, Christopher Giles, and current nationals Roger Cambridge, Julian Cambridge, Kevin Beaton and under-17 Nicholas Parbhudial.
The league was founded in 2008 by Garth Nelson, Manager of Guyana’s First Major League Soccer player, Gregory Richardson.
According to Nelson, its mission is to promote, educate and develop the Guyanese brand of football in the United States while instilling integrity, discipline, organisation and leadership to athletes participating in the league.
The league will also act as a conduit for channeling future players to the Guyana national teams (Golden Jaguars), thereby affording them the opportunity to represent Guyana in local and international competitions.
The inaugural champions are Linden United which is coached by former Netrockers player Rawle Henceford who is also the head coach of the Brooklyn College team. Opening play on Wednesday will see the defending champions Linden United matching skills with the Guyana Juniors F.C with the main event of the night bringing together, Beacons and Campton.
Sponsors of the league are the Guyana Sports Development Foundation, Top Five Barber Shop, John Turis Enterprises Inc., Night Flight Bar and Grill and Copy King.
