The University of Guyana (UG) council, under the chairmanship of UG pro chancellor Dr. Prem Misir, has appointed Professor Lawrence Carrington as interim Vice Chancellor of the university for one year.
This newspaper understands that Carrington’s stint commenced on April 1. Carrington is a retired professor formerly attached to the University of the West Indies (UWI).
According to reports, since the university council did not renew the contract of former Vice Chancellor, James Rose, last year government introduced a new initiative to forge a temporary link with UWI.
Professor Carrington’s appointment is as a result of this government initiative to give more credibility and recognition to the University of Guyana nationally and regionally.
The professor is expected to explore programme and subject areas in which the collaboration with UG and the UWI might enhance the quality of both institutions.
Also, sources say Carrington is charged with the responsibility of conducting a review of UG’s strategic plan as well as examine proposals to be put up by the university to achieve efficiency gains in its overall operations.
In addition, he is expected to review perceived leadership gaps and shortcomings at UG and propose changes to be made and how collaboration with UWI might mitigate the situation and lead to appropriate recruitment.
Sources have also said that Tota Mangar has reverted to his post as Deputy Vice Chancellor.
Meanwhile, Mr. Vincent Alexander was recently appointed Registrar of (UG), replacing David Chandabali.
According to reliable sources, a select committee of the University, also under the chairmanship of Dr. Prem Misir, unanimously decided to appoint Alexander.
Alexander has been Deputy Registrar of the university since 1994. He has a Masters of Law (Hons).
