Head Coach of the ‘Golden Jaguars’ Wayne ‘Wiggy’ Dover and his assistant Kavin Pearce leaves Guyana today for Trinidad and Tobago they will join the coaching staff at Neal and Massey Caledonia AIA as an assistant coaches.
Dover, apart from his outstanding service rendered at the national level and his exploits as head coach of Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United where he guided them to Cellink Premier League Championship honours from 2006-2008, will again work under the guidance of Technical Director of Caledonia, Jamaal Shabazz.
Dover, as head coach and Pearce as assistant both served under Shabazz’ during his tenure as Guyana Football Federation Technical Director from 2005 2008.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Dover revealed that he is very much committed to the game and its development in Guyana but had to make a conscious decision as a husband and father.
The Guyana Football Federation had made a proposal to Dover for full time employment but the remuneration package that was on offer was not in keeping with Dover’s expectations which prompted his move to the Twin Island Republic.
“I am still committed to football here but at the same time I have a responsibility to take care of my family. The relationship between me and the Federation is still very good and I intend to maintain that.”
At Caledonia, Dover will work with the Pro League team in the mornings and the Super League team in the afternoons while Pearce will perform duties with the Super League team.
Jerry Moe is the head coach while Trinidad and Tobago player Russell Latapy is an assistant coach/player.
“I am really looking forward to the challenge of working along with these goodly gentlemen to enhance the club and my career. I also intend to edify myself by attending courses and programmes while there and the GFF will be kept informed and up to date.”
Dover started his coaching career back in 1999 at Beacon FC the club where his career as a player also blossomed.
He took up the challenge as head of the technical staff at Alpha United in 2006 up until the end of 2008 when he resigned. During his time at Alpha, the club matured to the level of being among the best in Guyana.
They are the current Cellink Premier League kings, a championship they have won for the last three years among many other titles.
At the national level, Dover has coached at the under-20, 23 and senior levels under former Technical Directors Neider Dos Santos and Shabazz. Among the tournaments he took part in were the Olympic, World Cup Qualifying, Digicel Caribbean Championships and Inter Guiana Games, last year.
He was also coach when Guyana for the first time in its history eased under the 100 mark in the FIFA Coca Cola World rankings. The National Sports Commission recognised Dover’s contribution to the game by naming him Coach of the year, 2008.
Coach Pearce, a former first division goalkeeper with Santos, came through the ranks playing from the under-13 level before venturing into the realms of coach in 1986 with the Santos Youth team.
He worked as an assistant to Richard Alphonso in 1989 and when former national coach Andrew Grogan took over from Alphonso in 89, Pearce worked with him until 1994 before taking over as coach.
He had a brief stint with Alpha during Dover’s watch from 2007-2008 before returning to Santos.
On the national stage, Pearce has a wealth of experience rubbing shoulders and gaining knowledge from the likes of Derick Whyte at the senior level in 1997, Joseph Wilson (2001) at the under-23 level and under Shabazz from 2005 2008.
He too is relishing the challenge of working in the pro League ranks in the Twin Island Republic where Shabazz has been instrumental in securing numerous contracts for Guyanese players.
Their exposure in Trinidad over the years has impacted positively on Guyana’s performance and rise in the Caribbean. Shabazz, who considers himself Guyanese, has even come under heavy criticism from his fellow countrymen for his influence in Guyanese players plying their trade there.
He did promise that he would continue to help in any way possible to see the continued development of the sport in Guyana and that promise he is fulfilling. (Franklin Wilson)
