The Demerara Cricket Board secured three more sponsors to help develop local cricket when German’s Restaurant, W&H Rambarran Marine and W. Rambarran Transportation Service joined a growing list of supporters for the sport.
Attended by almost the entire executive of the DCB that included its President Bissoondial Singh, Vice-President Anand Sanasie, Treasurer- Pritipaul Jaigobin, Assistant Secretary – Samaroo Jailall and Public Relations Officer – Rovin Stanley, the three Companies joined forces to sponsor the Demerara Inter-Association Under-19 Competition which is expected to commence on Monday with two matches at Lusignan and Everest.
At the launching ceremony which was held in the Boardroom of the Guyana Cricket Board Office yesterday, President of the DCB Singh said that the sponsorship comes at a time when the West Indies team is doing well on the international scene and when all of the territories in the region are attempting to improve their cricket.
He added that Secretary of the Board Raj Singh was very instrumental in securing the sponsorship from the three reputable Companies and extended congratulations to the official.
He further stated that what the competition will seek to do is bridge the gap between the U-19’s and the seniors, pointing out that the tournament is extremely important because the current trend seems to indicate that more and more players are being exposed at an early age on the international scene.
“If we do not get sponsorship for tournaments of this nature then our efforts to provide an opportunity to the young players could be adversely affected,” Singh said. Singh also disclosed that the Board is hoping that the players seriously commit themselves to the tournament and showcase their talent since this competition will also be used to select a squad to represent Demerara at the upcoming annual Inter-County Competition.
He thanked the Companies for their support which according to him comes at a time when the world economy is experiencing a serious downturn.
General Manager of German’s Restaurant Clinton Urling in his comments revealed that the Management was extremely pleased and privileged to be associated with the competition, adding that the support for sports is all part of the Company’s Strategic Plan.
“I do not see a separation in the support for sports and assistance to the community and we had no difficulty in arriving at a decision to get on board and offer our backing,” Urling said.
He disclosed that the Company’s conclusion to get involved had a lot to do with accountability and once they were convinced, they had no reservation in coming forward.
“This is our first foray in terms of our involvement in cricket and I can assure you that it is surely not our last.”
Representative of the Rambarran Companies Bharat Singh in his remarks reminded those present that the entities were always supportive of sports, especially cricket.
“Since it is directed towards the youths, we feel it will go a far way in helping to develop them and I call on all the participants to make full use of the opportunity,” Singh advised.
Meanwhile, Vice-President Sanasie urged the media to remain supportive to the sport and thanked the Companies for coming on board despite the current financial meltdown.
The tournament will be known as the German’s Restaurant / W&H Rambarran Marine / DCB 50 overs Inter-Association U-19 Competition.
The two matches slated to initiate the tournament will see East Coast hosting East Bank at Lusignan, while West Demerara travel to Everest to engage Georgetown on Monday.
