A female police sergeant in Berbice had to seek urgent medical attention for a bite she sustained from a suspected thief while she was trying to apprehend him.
The suspect, Abdool Melaram, was desperately trying to escape but was overpowered by other male ranks who came to their colleague’s assistance.
Melaram, 18, was apprehended by police at the Alness Race Course on Sunday after he allegedly stole a bag containing a digital video camera while at a horse race meeting.
Melaram, of Rose Hall Town, is said to be a known character in the Corentyne area, who reportedly stole the bag from a woman who was at the races with relatives and friends.
The woman had placed her bag containing the digital video camera and other articles all valued at $231,000 on the bench alongside her.
She told police that she saw a hand ‘appear from nowhere’ and snatched her bag.
She immediately raised an alarm and public-spirited citizens and the police gave chase, and apprehended the crook.
The items were recovered.
Reports are that the man, while being taken to the station, made a desperate attempt to escape, biting the police sergeant on her hand and wounding another colleague as he lashed out with whatever he had. However, try as he may he was no match for the cops and was subsequently overpowered and taken away.
He is expected to face charges of attempting to commit a felony, wounding two police officers and resisting arrest, among other matters.
