The Linden Economic Advancement Programme’s (LEAP) Advisory Committee yesterday, in a statement to the media, said that is pleased to update the residents of Region Ten on the welcome news that the government has endorsed its proposal for continuity of the LEAP programme through the creation of a private corporation.
It has been suggested that this successor organisation to LEAP be named the Guyana Enterprise Corporation, headquartered in Region Ten and mandated to carry out the activities and provide those services of the LEAP programme, which have been retained, inclusive of the provision of credit services.
It added that the Guyana Government has acknowledged the success of the Linden Economic Advancement Fund (LEAF) during the three and one half years of operation, and has stated its appreciation for the work of the management, staffs and especially the clients in Region Ten who have to date repaid $305M to sustain the revolving fund.
The Private Sector Community in Region Ten has contributed to a rich portfolio, which is assisting the diversity of the economic base of the Region Ten.
In line with the Agreement signed with the European Commission (EC) to establish LEAF, loan approvals and disbursements ended on Tuesday.
After a brief period of review, it is the government’s intention to put in place the necessary arrangements to continue micro and small business credit facilities to Region Ten from the proceeds of the repayments of the LEAF loans.
Repayment of loans now in circulation will continue through this period.
