A full house was in attendance to see Delmur Gold conquer Jumbo Joy and La Bayamosa dust Coconut Boy to win the two main events when the Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club held its grand one day Pre Easter eight event horserace meet on Sunday last at the clubs race course at Alness on the Corentyne Coast.
It was excitement galore as all the events contested brought their own share of exhilaration. The main feature B class and lower event had a winning purse of $250,000 up for the taking compliments of Banks DIH limited and the Dr Dwight Waldron trophy over a distance of 1200M. By the time the horses were ready to take up their position in the starting gates the jam packed arena was abuzz with excitement as Turfites scrambled to take up advantageous position on what ever was available.
As the starting gates flew all the contestants had a clean break, but not before long it was stablemates Delmur Gold and the Message of the Elcock Shipping Company Stable who began to edge ahead.
Delmur Gold went slightly in front as pre race favourite Jumbo Joy, came to the fore in a three horse battle that went until the horses hit the home stretch. It was then that Jockey Paul Delph astride Delmur Gold decided to spur the champion horse into action and it responded in timely fashion, distancing it self by the second to win handsomely in the end, sparking wild celebration by connections of the Elcock stables. Jumbo Joy ridden by Kumar Singh squeezed out The Message with Michael Semple on board for second place as Annie’s Play Mate finished fourth.
The other feature event; the 3 yr old open race saw La Bayamosa of the Chris Jagdeo and Son Construction stable beating Coconut Boy to spoil its return to the racing arena after a long lay off. The race was sponsored by the RCMTC and Miller Construction and King Solomon Shipping for the Norman Singh Memorial trophy run over a distance of 1400m, with the winning prize being $200,000.
Coconut Boy as usual started with a blaze of speed and by the half way mark had opened up a sizable lead and looked like it would have been an easy walk in the park. However, by the far turn La Bayamosa had started to show its intentions with Lady of My Dreams also making a move as the rivals came into the final stretch. By then jockey Kumar Singh started to spur his animal on as the champion Grey responded with a tremendous burst of speed to dust the rest of the field and win easily in the end. Coconut Boy piloted by jockey May, held on to grind out a hard fought second by a whisker from Lady of My Dreams with Paul Delph on Board.
It was a clean sweep for horses of the Elcock Delmur Shipping Company stables as they captured the D class and lower 1400m event. Miss Republic ridden by Michael Semple led all the way as Face D Music with Prem Chandra had to do just that as World Class with Paul Delph on the mount came in third. The win was worth 200,000.
The F and G class event was taken by Laura Lee in Flight of the Customs Stables, guided by Daniel Flores, from Fairy Tale Romance, Sir Balajee and Tropical Passion. The win was worth $160,000 with the distance being 1200m. The 3-year non winners’1200m event saw a win for Royal Champion of the Ramnauth stables, ridden by Rovindra Ramnauth as it took the top prize of $150,000 ahead of Night Crescendo, Over the Mat and Star Streak.
It was a bright day for horses of the Elcock and Crawford stables as The Connection was again in winners row this time in the ‘I and J class race. The event saw Vanessa of the Crawford stable guided by Paul Delph having enough to finish ahead of Finishing Touches, with Kavinci and Zebra rounding out the money. The win was worth $75,000 in the 1200m race.
Wonder Lite of the Lenny Singh stable and ridden by Krishna Singh had things its way in the K class category to win from Lenny O Halo, Funny Side and Graphic. The win was worth $65,000 in the 1100m sprint.
It was time for serious business as Sean Paul of the Sooklall Stable with jockey Paul Delph again in the stirrups getting down to work and beating off the antics of Foolish Pleasure, Ruffian and Sandal Wood to carry away the $50,000 purse in the 1100m sprint.
Paul Delph was adjudged the champion jockey ahead of Kumar Singh who finished in the runner up spot.
The champion stable was Elcock Delmur Shipping Company Stable of No19 Corentyne Berbice, with Elcock himself being adjudged champion trainer. The well organized day’s activity saw some 70 horses participating.
