-suspect still at large
Six-month-old Seema Rabarat is recuperating at the Paediatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital after spending almost two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit of the hospital. The infant had suffered a fractured skull and a broken right arm.
On March 24, the baby and her mother, grandmother and aunt were attacked by the mother’s estranged husband.
Those attacked where 56-year-old Lapatie, called Shirley; her daughters, Kaloutie Kumar, 21; her six-month-old baby, Seema; and Hemwantie Jadunauth, 20. All the victims of the attack have since been discharged from the hospital.
The incident had occurred at the family’s First Street, Handenveldt, Mahaica home after a case of domestic case spiraled out of control.
The suspect, who is still at large, had begged Kaloutie to reconcile their differences but the woman had refused. This apparently angered him.
The woman’s sister had told this newspaper that Kaloutie was returning home after visiting the village clinic with her baby when she was attacked.
“When she come out from the taxi he chuck she and start to pull she. He tell she leh she go home,” Kumar said.
She added that the man picked up a piece of wood and started to beat her.
The woman sustained several blows to her head while trying to protect her baby but her efforts were in vain as several lashes landed on the infant, causing her to suffer a fractured skull and arm.
After seeing what was taking place, the sister and her mother both intervened but were also beaten by the assailant.
Police on the East Coast have launched a massive manhunt for the suspect. They are urging persons who know the individual to notify them. One officer said that if the suspects’ friends continue to source him with information they would be acting in accessory to the crime and would be dealt with accordingly.
