A useful all-round performance from former Guyana player Vishal Arjune helped Munroe Road register a six-wicket win against Moosai Sports in the 3rd round of the Eastern Credit Union National League on Sunday.
Responding to Moosai’s 164 all out on day one, Arjune (64) guided Munroe Road to 193 all out to claim first innings points and a 29 run lead.
Moosai were in danger of losing the match as they lost early wickets as Arjune took two for 25. Darry Balgobin had 3-24 and Kapil Harry 2-25 as Moosai were bowled out for 127.
With just 98 for victory but with time a factor, Munroe raced to the target for the loss of six wickets closing on 98-6.
At Wilson Road, Penal, dropped Guyana batsman Hoomchand Pooran took 5-32 with his off-spin as First Citizens Clarke Road collected first innings points over Ceramic Merry Boys.
Chasing Clarke Road’s first innings total of 212 all out, Merry Boys had little answer to the off-spin attack as 40-year-old former Trinidad and Tobago first-class off-spinner Mukesh Persad supported by Pooran with 3-52 as Merry Boys fell for 148.
Clarke Road closed on 150-4 in their second innings with Mahadeo Moonisar on 42 and Pooran 36.
There are several divisions of cricket in Trinidad with the eight-team National League being the highest.
The top Guyana players here play in this league while several other Guyanese cricketers are also participating in the various other leagues on the Island.
The clubs find accommodation, meals and jobs for the players in addition to cash incentives in each match. Those who play in the ‘higher’ leagues are also paid a salary by their club who also pay for their air ticket to and from the Twin Island Republic.
The club structure is well organized and commercialized in Trinidad with big companies sponsoring teams and proving gear and uniforms for the players.
