Seventeen years old, Vijay Rahim of the Hardcore Gym snatched 65kgs and clean and jerked 80kgs to claim the 53.7kgs title when Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association staged its National Novices and Schoolboys championships at Club Blue Note, Camp Street, Georgetown, Sunday morning last.
Rahim also broke the three records in the 56kgs class in the clean and jerk and snatch, consequently setting a new record for the overall total. He further amassed a bodyweight coefficient of 241.18 and carted off the best lifter prize.
Shane Bancroft of the Barims Gym snatched 60kgs and clean and jerked 77.5kgs to finish in second place, in front of Derrick Hyman, also of Barims, who clean and jerked similar poundage as Bancroft but only managed to snatch 57.5kgs. All three lifters competed in the Junior Male 56kg class.
26 lifters, consisting of eight schoolboys (10-14yrs) 13 juniors (16-20yrs), 2 seniors and two guest lifters, participated in the competition and according to the Secretary of the GAWA, Deion Nurse, executives were heartened by such a large turnout. He said that this is indicative of the huge strides that the GAWA is making in popularizing the sport.
The other results read: Boys U40kgs class: Shemar Roach (True Foundation) snatched 21kgs, clean, and jerked another 21kgs to emerge top lifter while his gym mate, Keith Bobb Semple snatched 18kgs and clean and jerked 21kgs. Kema Jobe (TF) came in third after he snatched 16kgs and clean and jerked 18kgs.
Over 40kgs
Alistair Dookran (Barims) snatched 42.5, and clean and jerked 55kgs to emerge victorious in this division while Joel Moore (TF) snatched 35kgs and clean and jerked 45kgs to come in second. George Crandon clean and jerked 21kgs and snatched 23kgs, to finish third.
Schoolboys over 50kgs
1st was Teion Timmerman (Barims) who snatched 42.5kgs and clean and jerked 55kg,while his gym mate, Teion Wilson came in 2nd after he snatched 32.5kgs and clean and jerked 45kgs.
Junior Male 56kgs
Rahim triumphed in this division while Shane Bancroft (Barims) copped the second place after snatching 60kgs and clean and jerked 77.5kgs. Derrick Hyman (Barims) was 3rd with a snatch of 57.5kgs and clean and jerked 77.5 while his gym mate, Shandradai Jairam finished in 4th place after snatching 45kgs with clean and jerk lift of 65kgs. Donald Sookhai (Barims) snatched 47.5kgs and clean and jerked 62.5kgs to occupy the fifth place while Kelvin Moore (True Foundation) finished in the sixth place after he snatched 45kgs and clean and jerked 60kgs.
Derron Wright (Barims) snatched 40kgs and clean and jerked 55kgs and finished in the 7th position while Alex Sookhai, also of Barims, snatched 37.5kgs and clean and jerked 50kgs to occupy the 8th place slot. Kenrick Cozier (True Foundation) finished in the cellar position after he snatched 32.5kgs and clean and jerked 50kgs.
Junior Male 62kg: Orwayne Cozier (Truer Foundation) snatched 47.5kgs and clean and jerked 60kgs for first place while Oliver Kippings (Barims) came in second after snatching 50kgs with a clean and jerk of 57.5kgs.
Junior Male 69kgs: Salim Mohamed (Barims) snatched 47.5kgs and clean and jerked 65kgs to land a first place.
Junior Male 77kgs: Allister Dookran (Barims) snatched 45kgs and clean and jerked 57.5kgs to walk away with top honours.
Open Men 69kgs: Mohamed Rossan (Hardcore) snatched 60kgs and clean and jerked 80kgs
Open Men 77kgs: Nigel Phillips (Hardcore) snatched 72.5kgs and clean and jerked 90kgs to be adjudged winner in his division.
Guest lifters 77kgs: Roberto Tiwari (Barims) snatched 67.5kgs and clean and jerked 95kgs while in the 94kgs class, Ajodha Harricharran, also of Barims, snatched 85kgs and clean and jerked 110kgs.
