The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association in a release said they are saddened at the passing of former President and First Lady, Janet Jagan.
In offering sincere sympathy to the sorrowing family, relatives and friends, GASA stated that when the association was resuscitated in 1993, after being dormant for many years, Mrs. Jagan was instrumental in granting the Association and individual clubs access to the Castellani Pool.
The Association is still allowed to use this facility for the training of our higher-level swimmers and our steady improvement over the years can be directly attributed to this.
The release went on to say that it was interesting to see, in the Kaieteur News, that Mrs. Jagan was once close to competing in swimming in the 1936 Olympics. Perhaps this at least partly explains her empathy with the sport.
“We shall be forever grateful to Mrs. Jagan for her invaluable contribution to the sport of swimming in Guyana.”
