With over another session lost to rain on the final day yesterday, Guyana settled for first innings points as their 12th round WICB Regional four-day cricket encounter against host Trinidad and Tobago ended in a draw at the Queens Park Oval.
Narsingh Deonarine continued his wonderful season with an entertaining 74 from 129 balls, 166 minutes with 10 fours and a six and moved to within 50 runs of becoming the first batsman to score 1000 runs in a single regional first-class season.
Chris Barnwell supported with his second half-century at this level and his 57 was decorated with seven fours and lasted 85 balls and 116 minutes as Guyana reached 213-7 in their second innings when play was called off at 17:11hrs with 13 of the mandatory 15 overs to be bowled.
With a first innings lead of 23, Guyana resumed the final day on 0-0 and progressed to 129-3 by lunch with the in-form Deonarine on 35 and his Skipper Travis Dowlin on 14.
Sewnarine Chattergoon and Leon Johnson did little to enhance their chances of the speedy West Indies recall by again failing to put a substantial innings together and their demise in quick succession left Guyana on 44-2. Chattergoon (9) pulled pacer Atiba Alert to square-leg while Johnson’s inconstant season continued when he edged a drive at leg-spinner Imran Khan to slip after making a single.
Beaten outside off-stump on a few occasions, Barnwell also played some enterprising cover drives and soon reached his second fifty in his debut season before he missed a very good delivery from debutant pacer Navin Stewart and was bowled at 91-3. His 47 lasted 85 balls, 116 minutes and was decorated with seven boundaries.
The 25-year-old Deonarine reached 900 runs this season when he reached 24 and by lunch looked well entrenched to play another long innings and increase his chances of being selected for the West Indies tour to England after playing the last of his four Tests in Sri Lanka just under four years ago.
After lunch Dowlin was dropped on 14 at short mid-wicket; pulling a long hop from Khan while Deonarine raced to his 26th first-class half-century and seventh score over fifty for the season with a brutal pull off Amit Jaggernauth and a sweetly timed on-drive off Khan for boundaries.
Deonarine, who has scored two centuries this season including 198 against CCC at Bourda, showed urgency in his shot selection as the skies became very overcast while Dowlin also batted positively before rain stopped play at 13:00hrs with Guyana on 148-3 with Deonarine on 50 and Dowlin on 18. Although the rain stopped and the sun returned, the resumption was delayed by over two hours due to the wet condition to the pitch adjacent to the one being used after the ground staff were caught napping when the rain came.
The rest of second session was washed out and after play resumed at 15:10hrs Dowlin (18) was taken at point at 148-4 and Deonarine, who tried desperately to counter a very defensive and at times negative wide of the stumps attack to him with bold shots, swept Sherwin Ganga to short fine leg to leave Guyana on 180-5.
Deonarine, in the attempt to score quickly before the time expired to get to his third ton of the season might have given his wicket away, but he again looked in total command at the crease and played an array of enterprising shots.
Steven Jacobs (7) was leg before to Ganga at 193-6 and Derwin Christian (13) was leg before to Imran Khan at 212-7 while Assad Fudadin who also made a concerted effort to counter-attack the bowling in hazy sunshine, was unbeaten on 16 when the game was called off. Davendra Bishoo (0) was with him at the end.
Sherwin Ganga, Atiba Alert and Khan picked up two wickets each for Trinidad and Tobago who took three points from the game to move to 54.
The Guyanese got six points to move to 30 with two matches remaining, are still in the cellar position and are scheduled to depart Trinidad today for Jamaica where they face the defending champions in their penultimate game from Friday at Sabina Park.
