Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday placed Earl Goodheart, of Tucville on $100,000 bail for allegedly having in his possession one forged $500 Guyana currency note on March 27, last, without lawfully authority. He pleaded not guilty.
According to the defendant, who is an electrician and mason, he had sold a hat for $3,900 and had received the $500 as part of the payment.
He said that it was only after he had returned home that he realised that the money was forged. “Is only when I get home I see that the money de man give me is bad” Goodheart explained.
The defendant further told the court that he kept the money in his car with the intention that he would have confronted the man who bought the hat from him. He said that he was driving and the police stopped his car during a routine patrol and they found the forged currency note.
Police Prosecutor Seetaram did not oppose bail, but told the court that on the day in question the defendant was driving along Duncan Street when the police stopped and asked for his license and registration.
After the defendant could not have produced the documents he was taken to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) where the police searched the vehicle.
The prosecutor further stated that after the vehicle was searched the money was unearthed.
Goodheart is expected to make his next court appearance on May 11.
Also appearing before the same magistrate was Hubert Mc Cullen 30, of Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.
On March 27 at Plaisance, the accused had in his possession 17 live rounds of 9mm bullets without being the holder of a firearm licence.
A second charge states that the accused, on the same day also at Plaisance had in his possession a 9mm pistol without being the holder of a firearm license.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges. Attorney at law Glenn Hanoman is representing him.
According to Hanoman, his client is a private investigator attached with the Guyana Police Force.
Hanoman also pleaded with the magistrate for the matter to be transferred to a functional court instead of one that does not sit regularly. The matter was transferred to the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court for April 1.
Until that time the defendant is to remain in police custody.
