Established to create opportunities for youths to be involved in meaningful activities thus paving the way for them to become responsible persons of the society, the Young and Thoughtful Youth Programme came into existence nine years ago.
And in observance of its sustenance and impact to local communities, the youth group, which has since been renamed the Obama Youth Organisation in honour of the current United States President, has been involved in a number of community activities throughout this month.
Among the activities was a blood donation drive at the National Blood Transfusion Service, donation of toys and books to the Paediatric Ward of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, painting of trees and working along with Habitat for Humanity in helping to build a home for a house partner.
Chairman of the youth group, Cornelius Roberts, who was ably assisted by other executive members and 40 volunteers, led the activities.
The youth group came into being in February, 2000, and aims to create an environment in which youths are encouraged to develop their full mental, spiritual and physical potentials through opportunities which will enable them to become responsible and productive citizens.
Two candidates were nominated to take the position as President and following an election on Friday, February 18, 2000, at the Channel 9 Television Station, Cornelius Roberts secured the most votes and the prestigious position.
The club was officially launched with its complete executive committee on the March 8, 2000, at the Church of Christ building on Hadfield Street.
The youth group is now a registered Youth Organization at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
