ADVENTURE, CORENTYNE – The Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce has donated a $100,000 cheque for the relatives of the slain Oslen Glasgow.
The 25-year old, 18682 Detective Constable, Oslen Trevis Glasgow of Fyrish Village, Corentyne was shot dead in the line of duty at the Cromarty Foreshore on Friday November 28, 2008.
The presentation of the cheque was made last Friday during the re-commissioning ceremony of the Felix Austin Police College Division ‘B’ situated at Adventure on the Corentyne.
No member of the family was at the function and as such the Vice President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce, Imran Hamid and Committee member Balram Shane, handed over the cheque to the Commander of Division ‘B’ of the Guyana Police Force Assistant Commission George Alexander Vyphuis on behalf of the family.
On Saturday, Mrs. Doreen Glasgow, mother of the slain policeman said that she was not aware of the donation or that any money was given for the family. “I don’t know nothing about any money. Yesterday (Friday) I went to Williamsburg to collect his father pension around 9:30 and I hear the escort them passing and is when I watching the news I see is the training school open. I ain’t know we get money.”
Nevertheless, she is appreciative for the gesture. “I am very grateful fuh the cheque because since my son dead I ain’t get no money from nowhere up to now. So I very happy to get it whenever they bring it.”
The woman further stated, “He (Oslen Glasgow) was serving the Police Force and imagine that is Mr. Poonai them (Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce) had to give me money before them (Guyana Police Force) and them police ain’t even call me till now since he dead last year.”
When contacted over the weekend, Mr. Vyphuis indicated that when Oslen Glasgow was honoured posthumously, the mother collected the medal in Georgetown. “In terms of who should have informed her of the presentation of the cheque – I cannot say. It was organized by the Chamber.”
On Saturday, President of the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce Bhigroog Poonai said, “This cheque is just a token of appreciation for his commitment to uphold law and order and to show his relatives that he may be gone but his service is not forgotten.”
According to Mr. Poonai, the members of his Chamber are always willing to lend a helping hand in times of need.
During September last year, the Central Corentyne Chamber presented a $50,000 cheque to offset medical expenses for Nicola Blades of Stanleytown in New Amsterdam.
The organization also honours, on an annual basis, the high flyers at the National Grade Six Examination (Common Entrance). A trophy is usually donated each year to the best graduating student in the Faculty of Agriculture at Tain Campus of the University of Guyana. Bi-annually the chamber recognizes the outstanding contributions of businessmen within the Central Corentyne area.
The Central Corentyne recently acquired some paint for the Corentyne Based Rehabilitation Centre and added a shed to protect the children from the elements of the weather.
