Pollard looking for commitment from his charges
By Franklin Wilson
With just a few days remaining before their return game against Haiti’s Tempete FC in the Caribbean Football Union’s Club Champions Cup, Alpha’s captain Charles ‘Lily’ Pollard is looking for more commitment and desire from his fellow players.
Pollard, who is also Captain of the ‘Golden Jaguars’, is of the view that the players who are talented are giving up too easy and must show a better fighting spirit.
Kaieteur Sport caught up the central defender after their training session at the Guyana Defence Force ground on Saturday afternoon.
Pollard revealed that he would be very happy if negotiations, presently being done by Club President Odinga Lumumba to engage the services of a striker and midfielder are successful.
“I think we are lacking in these areas and it is important that the president gets through with these guys which would give us a massive boost.”
Generally, Pollard believed the players listen to him a lot and he tries to impart his knowledge to them. He is also of the view that the addition of Pele’s Coach Denzil Thompson to the Technical Staff is a big boost for the team.
“They would bring additional knowledge to the team and their coming on board has allowed me to concentrate on my playing. In the last couple of weeks it was hard on me doubling up as the assistant coach and having to focus as captain.”
Head coach Mervin Wilson disclosed that in the remaining days, the focus would be on fitness and fine tuning their tactics (corners, set plays, free kicks, penalty kicks) for the return game.
“All in all, I think we are getting there and we will be ready for this all important game which we are aiming to win come Sunday.”
Lumumba disclosed that the team is aiming to leave Guyana on Wednesday or Thursday, arrangements are still being fine tuned.
