– caught red-handed with hand in victim’s pocket
Known convict Jermaine Samuels called ‘German’ who was recently granted bail by the High Court on a charge of armed robbery after being committed to stand trial in the same court is back behind bars.
Samuels, of no fixed place of abode, was remanded to prison by Magistrate Chandra Sohan on Friday when he appeared at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court to answer to the charge of larceny from the person.
It would appear that although Samuels was given his pre trial liberty for another offence, he could not keep his hands out of crime and was caught red handed with it in another’s man’s pocket.
Police prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figuera told the court that the convict, while in company with two others at a recent horse race meeting at Bush Lot on the Corentyne robbed US based Guyanese, Ramcharran of over G$500,000, including foreign currency. The Prosecutor said that a very large crowd was at the venue and the thieves used the opportunity to surround the VC while the accused pushed his hands in Ramcharran pocket and relieved him of the money.
The victim held on to Samuels’ hand and raised an alarm, even as Samuels handed over the money to an accomplice who fled the scene.
Alert police who were at the venue arrested the bandit and gave chase after his fleeing buddies, but they managed to elude capture.
Samuels is part of a notorious gang that included his brother Quacy Samuels called ‘Big Worm’ and Nigel Henry called ‘Zip’ that had wreaked havoc in the Berbice area.
They were all committed to stand trial recently after a prima facie case was made out against them on armed robbery charges.
In that case they had brutally robbed several families in the remote agricultural community of Ma Retraite on the East Bank Berbice on June 23, 2007.
Also, during that robbery spree, one of their accomplices Michael Fraser called ‘Gamble’ was shot dead.
Samuels will have his next court hearing at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on the 31st March.
