Juliet Bobb-Semple, 54, who was accidentally struck in her right ankle by a stray police bullet, on Friday morning, is now listed as in stable condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Bobb-Semple was standing just outside the front door of her 37 Hadfield Street residence when the bullet, which was fired by police ranks who were pursuing a suspect, struck her.
The wounded woman was subsequently taken to the GPHC by a police patrol. While she was tended to quickly, she was not taken into the operating theatre until well into the night.
According to Bobb-Semple’s family members, they were given various reasons, at different times, as to why Bobb-Semple’s operation could not begin.
Earlier in the afternoon, medical personnel said that they needed to do another X-ray of her (Bob-Semple) wounded leg.
Some time after this, family members were told that her blood pressure was too high and that the operation could not be done until it (blood pressure) had been lowered.
By the time the sun had set, nurses told Bobb-Semple’s family that the anaesthesiologist was not present at the GPHC, and as such, the operation could not begin.
The entire waiting period panicked Bobb-Semple’s family, largely because they did not know what was going on, or how the injured woman was doing. The wounded woman’s daughter, Delicia Bobb-Semple explained that the family, “just sat there, waiting for some news of how she is; we just sat there, waiting and hoping.”
The family, lacking information as to what was going on, kept on asking passing nurses how Juliet was doing, and in that manner, was able to pick up bits and pieces of information.
According to reports from the injured woman’s family, Juliet was brought out of the operating theatre at approximately 23:30 hours on Friday night, almost 12 hours after she was taken to the GPHC by the police patrol.
A police statement said that the ranks were conducting investigations into a report of felonious wounding in the Hadfield Street area when they entered a house in search of a suspect. Upon entering the building, the suspect, armed with a cutlass, attacked one of the policemen.
The police said that even though they made repeated calls for the suspect to desist, he continued to attack the police, and tried to make good his escape. The police rank who was being attacked, discharged a round in the direction of the suspect but unfortunately, Juliet was hit.
The suspect managed to escape.
