Pomeroon fire victim, Vilene Mc Leod, and five of her ten children, all of Grant Unity, Lower Pomeroon River, received a monetary donation, as well as food items and clothing, on Thursday. That donation was made through the Regional Mothers’ Union of Region Two.
Mrs. Mc Leod lost her three-bedroom home to fire on February 21, last, and according to the single parent, she still can see the fire.
According to her, she was attending a barbeque two miles from her home and was returning at around 11.30pm when she noticed fire emanating from one of her bedroom windows and her first instinct was to call for her seven-year-old son, one of the five children who lived with her.
She said when she did not get a response she then ventured inside the burning home and began desperately to wake up the four children, who were fast asleep.
Mrs. Mc Leod said eventually she managed to rouse the children and hurry out of the building even as the flame engulfed it. She said neighbours who also had noticed the fire came to her aid and formed a bucket brigade. She said that they summoned the services of the Essequibo fire service, which arrived when the damage was already done.
Mrs. Mc Leod lost thousands of dollars in household and electrical equipment, furniture, a generator and a refrigerator.
According to Mrs. Mc Leod, Pomeroon has been her home for the last 15 years. She is now living with a friend in Charity.
She thanked the Mothers’ Union for remembering her at this time and requested God’s blessing on that body.
Regional Mothers’ Union President, Mrs. Corleen Steaman, said that the organisation is always willing and ready to give back to the less fortunate. She deemed the donation a great pleasure.
A few weeks back Mrs. Mc Leod was again the recipient of another donation, this time from the Guyana Relief Council in Georgetown. On that occasion she received a mattress and other household equipment, clothing and foodstuff.
Mrs. Mc Leod said although she is most grateful for the gifts, her primary need at present is for a new home.
