In what was described as a surprise move, the City Constabulary, under orders from the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) of Georgetown, demolished a number of stalls in the Stabroek Market area, just outside of the Western side of Demico House, on Friday evening.
In addition to demolishing the stall the goods were taken away by the City Constabulary.
According to one of the vendors, they were instructed to move their stands by 18:00 hours. “We can’t be vex. They told us that we need to move.”
However, other vendors are alleging that they knew nothing about the deadline. What irked them even more was the fact that only one set of vegetable vendors was moved. Not far from the scene of the demolition, other vendors continued to sell with no hassle from the authorities.
“How come only one set of people can sell until 6 o’clock, and others can’t?” asked one vendor.
During the removal process, some of the vendors claimed that the City Constabulary ranks damaged their personal property and mixed up their goods. “They put everyone’s goods together, now we don’t even know what belongs to whom,” said one of the vendors.
