The state of Guyana’s health sector

Dear Editor,
Guyana’s health sector is on its way to augmentation.
Government has allocated a total of $11 billion towards the health sector in the 2009 Budget.
Government has also started to introduce health reforms so that the Ministry of Health can strengthen its steering role and focus on policymaking, standard setting, monitoring and evaluation.
Both governmental and non-governmental organisations are working in collaboration to improve and deliver health care programmes and services to all Guyanese.
Last year there was the completion of the Lethem Hospital, and now works are being done to enhance and improve the Mabaruma Hospital.
The regional health services are now expanding, so that all communities can have full access to health services, so as to prevent persons living in remote areas from travelling long distances to seek medical attention. Regional health officers are undergoing training, so as to increase their numbers to facilitate these regional health institutions.
Guyana saw history in the making when Munesh Mangal of Lusignan, East Coast Demerara received the first kidney transplant surgery at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) performed in Guyana.
And so, Government is focused on increasing the number of specialised services offered by the GPHC in areas such as cardiac surgery, hip replacement, and cancer treatment.
Medical professionals are on the increase and have been deployed across the public health care system to provide their services countrywide.
The collaboration of Guyana’s health and growth programmes is necessary and so, these efforts for improvement of the Health Sector are good to maintain economic growth and a healthy human resource so as to continue the development of this country.
