Retired Major Winston George, Guyana’s second local kidney transplant patient, is said to be in much better condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital and under close watch by doctors.
Up to press time yesterday, George was still in the High Dependency Unit.
According to the man’s wife, Lorraine, there has been a noticeable improvement since he was admitted earlier this week.
She told this newspaper that her husband is now able to eat on his own and is not frequenting the bathroom as often as he did when he was first admitted on Tuesday.
According to Mrs. George, she has not yet been able to see the doctor who is looking after her husband to get a proper explanation as to what really is the problem, but after her visit yesterday she was satisfied that the doctors are doing a good job. Her husband, she said, is showing little signs of weakness.
The 47-year-old George was readmitted to the hospital on Tuesday last after he had been feeling weak and was hardly able to eat solid foods. He was also experiencing a burning sensation in his mouth and was forced to urinate every time he consumed any liquid. Yesterday, Mrs. George said all that has eased notably.
After suffering from renal failure for a number of years, George was afforded a kidney from his 25-year-old daughter, Melissa George, an Immigration Officer, who is said to be doing well and is back on the job.
The operation, which represents the second such procedure to be conducted at the public hospital, was again conducted by New York-based doctor, Rahul Jindal.
Dr Jindal had assured that he will continue to assist local doctors in the follow-up treatment of the patients by advising them via telephone and email.
