Is Guyana’s greatest wealth to be found overseas?

Dear Editor,
I wish to respond to a letter written by Marissa Lowden titled, “The greatest wealth of any country is its population.”
Ms. Lowden was generous to highlight the many public programmes and monies allocated to help raise the literacy level in Guyana. If her information is correct, then our public officials must be applauded for their efforts to ensure that citizens have access to quality educational resources.
The only concern I have with Ms. Lowden’s analysis is the assumption she makes that by simply investing in such resources, it will lead to “sustained growth and development for any country.” Guyana’s problem in relation to skilled and literate individuals who are capable of making positive contributions to its development has always been the inability to convince them to remain within the confines of its geographical boundaries.
Yes, having a highly skilled population is desirable for any country’s development. However, you have a serious impediment on your hand if the majority of that population leaves after taking advantage of the available resources at home and opts to reside in another country.
If one were to take Ms. Lowden’s logic, then it can be said that Guyana’s greatest wealth reside overseas.
