Six-month-old Seema Rabarat, of Mahaica, was yesterday rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Hospital after her condition took a turn for the worse. Doctors and nurses are closely monitoring her condition.
The infant had sustained a broken arm and head injuries during an attack and was admitted to the hospital last Tuesday.
Also admitted were the baby’s mother, 21-year-old Kaloutie Kumar, grandmother Lapatie, 56, and aunt Hemwantie Jadunauth, 20, all of First Street, Handenveldt, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.
The four sustained varying injuries after Kaloutie’s estranged reputed husband went berserk.
Kaloutie and her sister Hemwantie have since been released from hospital.
The suspect had begged Kaloutie to reconcile but she refused and this angered him.
The woman’s sister, Hemwantie Jadunauth, had told this newspaper that Kaloutie was returning home after visiting the village clinic with her baby when she was attacked.
“When she come out from the taxi he chuck she and start to pull she. He tell she leh she go home,” Kumar said.
She added that the man pulled her sister who was bracing to a lamp post; the infant was still in her hands.
The suspect then picked up a piece of wood and started to strike Kaloutie.
The woman sustained several blows to her head while trying to protect her baby but her efforts were in vain as several lashes landed on the infant, fracturing her skull and arm.
After seeing what was taking place, the sister along with her mother both intervened but were also attacked by the assailant.
The injured family members were all taken to the Georgetown Hospital by a relative.
The entire family expressed disgust at the actions of the man whom they claimed had been eluding arrest for several years.
They also claimed that the police at Mahaica have received more than 20 reports of domestic abuse perpetrated by the suspect.
