Recipient of a kidney during the most recent transplant operation undertaken at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Retired Major, Winston George, was readmitted to the public institution yesterday after he became concerned about his health.
According to the 47-year-old man, who was accompanied to the hospital by his wife, Lorraine, he has been feeling weak and is hardly able to eat solid foods. He has a burning sensation in his mouth and urines every time he consumes water.
Speaking from his bed in the High Dependency Unit of the hospital, George, who was being administered saline, related that it was since last week that he had advised his doctor about his condition. He said that he was advised by the doctor to return to the hospital at anytime if his condition persists.
According to the man, his main concern lies in the fact that he seems to be consuming more water than the doctor recommended.
“The doctor told me that I should only drink enough to quench my thirst but it seems as if every time I drink the water it passes right out so I am drinking more all the time to replace water in my system just so I do not become dehydrated.”
The man has attributed his weakness to the fact that he has not been eating much solid foods. “I am still walking shakily. When I am at home I am lying down all the time.”
George revealed, too, that he has been experiencing a burning sensation in his mouth, which has persisted for some time since his operation on February 1.
According to George, he was informed that the burning sensation is in fact a side effect of the operation and should have been appeased by the use of a mouthwash, which was provided by the hospital.
However, he is of the belief that there was some misunderstanding as it relates to the application of the mouthwash. “The nurses told me that I needed to rinse my mouth with the mouthwash then spit it out and that is what I was doing. But I was told by a doctor that I needed to rinse and swallow. Even the bottle said that I needed to swallow the liquid…so I believe this is how the problem started.”
George said that he was told that his failure to utilise the mouthwash in the correct way had caused him to develop a fungus in his mouth, which is responsible for the burning sensation he is experiencing.
After suffering from renal failure for a number of years, George was afforded a kidney from his 25-year-old daughter, Melissa George, an Immigration Officer, who is said to be doing well and is back on the job.
The operation, which represents the second such procedure to be conducted at the public hospital, was again conducted by New York-based doctor, Rahul Jindal.
Dr Jindal had assured that he will continue to assist local doctors in the follow-up treatment of the patients by advising them via telephone and email.
