The Ministry of Health has received reports that an individual is walking the streets East Berbice requesting money from persons to purchase blood for his child who needs surgery in the hospital.
Health Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy said that the man is going house to house telling persons that he urgently needs to acquire ‘hundreds of thousands of dollars’ to buy blood for his child’s surgery.
“First of all, if people were paying there is no such thing as hundreds of thousands of dollars for blood…Secondly, we do not accept blood from any donor who was paid to give blood,” Minister Ramsammy said.
The Health Minister noted that this issue is not only occurring in Berbice, but across the entire country, as persons are seeking money under false pretence.
“It appears as if people are taking advantage of the fact that both the government and the public are extremely supportive of assistance for medical interventions here in Guyana or abroad.”
Dr. Ramsammy is advising organisations and the general public to seek the Ministry’s advice before handing out money to any such individuals.
While acknowledging that there are legitimate cases where persons really are in need of some monetary assistance from the public, there are those who tend to take advantage of the system.
“People are using all these things to collect money and I’m not sympathetic to that.”
He added that the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) no longer demands of families to donate blood.
“We encourage them to go and donate if they don’t have relatives to do so, but the patient in the hospital will get blood one way or the other through the Ministry’s programme, but there is no such thing as charges,” Minister Ramsammy said.
He explained that those who seek the services of the private sector have to pay for the handling of blood.
