Dear Editor,
Mr. Hamilton Green was quite right when he said that the appointment of Mr. Kwame McCoy to the Rights of the Child Commission is akin to indecency (Kaieteur News 15/3/2009). But there is one small hiccup; he does not have the moral authority to say it.
It therefore loses its weight because Mr. Green has said it.
Using a similar line of reasoning, Green’s occupation of City Hall for over 13 years is also akin to indecency. What is worse is that this is the same gentleman who talks about a moral and spiritual revival. Mr. Green will say that he is not keeping himself there, right enough.
The truth is, he is. Though he constantly berates the government for all the ills at the council, Mr. Green, refuses to walk away. He has full knowledge that he can without any obligation to anyone but he has not done so, neither does he appear to be getting ready to allow someone else to make a try at turning things around for the city.
Even in the absence of Local Government Elections, which were not held for over a decade, shouldn’t it have been the principles of democracy or at least common decency, guiding the action of this self-professed moralist?
Surely, Mr. Green must know how daunting it would be for citizens to accept his message if he occupies a public political office for which he has no real mandate.
According to law, the council’s mandate of which he is chairman expired since 1997.
Even the elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor have not been forthcoming. Therefore, in my opinion, Mr. Green is guilty of the same sin for which he now judges the government.
