A 19-year-old Berbician, who was described as a drug kingpin on the Corentyne, was given the maximum penalty by Magistrate Chandra Sohan at the Whim Magistrate’s Court for trafficking in narcotics.
Aaron Sukhoo, who pleaded guilty to the offence, was arrested on March 4, while he was on bail for a previous similar offence.
Magistrate Sohan imposed the maximum five-year penalty and fined the accused $64,000 or a further one-year imprisonment.
Sukhoo who resides alone at Crabwood Creek, Upper Corentyne, and seven other men were caught in his house with 60 grams of cannabis when police raided the residence two weeks ago.
Prosecutor Corporal Roberto Figueira told the court that the police conducted a search at the convict’s home and unearthed the cannabis, stashed in a back bedroom of the residence.
He said the men who were all watching cricket, were arrested, told of the offence, and charged.
In court Sukhoo told the court that the commodity was his and begged the court to have mercy on him.
He said that he does not have anybody to take care or help him since parents are dead and he has had to fend for himself since he was small.
He also told the court that the other defendants did not know anything of the drugs and were just there to watch cricket and eat some food.
The Prosecutor then requested that the maximum penalty be meted out to the defendant.
He told the court that the defendant is a regular at this practice and has been involved in the drug running business since he was a juvenile.
He said that the accused was charged for being in possession of cocaine and marijuana four years ago and was subsequently granted bail and while on bail for those matters, he committed the present offence.
The convict also has other matters pending at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court and no mercy should be shown to him since he showed no mercy to the people’s lives that he has destroyed, the prosecutor added.
