The police detained a suspected car thief and a spray painter yesterday, after he attempted to sell a stolen car that had been repainted, to its original owner.
According to reports, the wife of the owner of the car had parked the car in Kingston approximately one month ago.
When she returned to the location where she had parked the car, she discovered that it was gone. A report was subsequently made to the police.
The suspected car thief took the car to a spray painter, who repainted the originally red Toyota Marino, white.
According to the detained spray painter, the man who brought the car to him did not pay for the job of repainting.
As such, he refused to let the man take the car away. The man told the spray painter that when he got the car sold, he would pay him for his labour.
The suspected car thief apparently did not know the man who owned the car but approached him with the offer of a white Toyota Marino for $250,000.
The owner of the car suspected that it might have been his car that the man was trying to sell back to him. The model was the same and it was being sold for such a cheap price.
He then arranged to meet the suspected car thief at Kersaint Park, La Bonne Intention (LBI), East Coast Demerara, to inspect and buy the car. His suspicions led him to also alert the police.
The spray painter was also present for the inspection and expected sale because he had not yet been paid for the job.
It was at this stage that the Police moved in and detained them both.
The car was taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, before it was moved to the Brickdam Police Station. The police are still investigating the matter.
