A 19-year-old United States-based Guyanese who allegedly attempted to smuggle cocaine out of Guyana on Wednesday last, was remanded to prison when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, yesterday.
Tenisha Roslyn Braithwaite, on March 18, at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, allegedly had in her possession 1,455 kilograms of cocaine for the sole purpose of trafficking in narcotics.
She pleaded not guilty and is being represented by attorney-at-law Mark Waldron, who told the court that his client is a student in the U.S.
However, Special Prosecutor for the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, Oswald Massiah, objected to bail. He also told the court that when the defendant was arrested she had told the investigating ranks that she was a cashier and not a student.
Waldron then told the court that the prosecution should not discuss certain aspects of the case so early. He further noted that if this is the road that the prosecution wishes to take the question must arise as to why the drugs passed through all the security check points and was found on the aircraft, leading to his client being taken off the airplane.
Braithwaite was remanded and is expected to make her next court appearance on Monday.
The matter was also transferred to the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
Braithwaite was nabbed on Wednesday last as she was attempting to board a flight back to her adopted homeland. This is the second young adult in a week to be nabbed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, allegedly attempting to smuggle drugs out of Guyana.
On Friday last, ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit, at Timehri, unearthed some 10 kilograms of cocaine concealed in packets of baking powder in the luggage of a New York-based Guyanese.
Asante D’Aguiar was at the time attempting to board a flight back to her adopted homeland when she was nabbed. She has been charged and remanded to prison.
A search was conducted and the drugs were reportedly found neatly packed in her suitcases in baking powder packets.
