Kicks off this evening at Tucville ground
By Franklin Wilson
Football in terms of its consistency has been great in the city over the last twelve months with tournaments at every level contested. But none of the teams cannot really stake claim to the title as knock-out kings despite success by some in different competitions which has also involved teams from sister associations.
So the issue of who are the knock-out artistes will be decided once and for all at the end of the second annual Banks Premium Beer competition which kicks off this evening at the Tucville ground with a double header.
Pele, who once enjoyed the status as the best in this business have been enjoying menacing form in the last six months or so and will start the competition as favourites having won the last two competitions, Kashif and Shanghai and Mayor’s Cup.
Pele, who are also the defending champions can however rest assure that the other big guns in the form of Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United, Guyana Defence Force, Sunburst Camptown, Fruta Conquerors, BK International Western Tigers and Santos among the sixteen teams involved will all be out to win the competition and with it, bragging rights as the best in the business.
The battles are expected to be intense and spectators as they have been accustomed to, can saddle up for action-packed football.
The technical staff of the various teams has been working overtime to ensure that their charges are in the best op shape going into this tournament which will serve as warm up to the 2009 Cellink Premier League.
The Santos / Flamingo main attraction match two teams with contrasting abilities. Flamingo will be basking in their qualification for the Premier League for the first time ever having finished as the runner-up at the division one level to Western Tigers.
They will however miss the services of the inspirational Shem Porter who Kaieteur Sport understands has migrated to the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
This loss will in no way deter Flamingo from aiming to topple Santos who will be campaigning at the division one level this season having finished in the penultimate position of the Premier League.
Flamingo will be led by the experienced Leon Yaw, Miguel Hudson, Leon Johnson, Eon Moore, Captain Leon Singh, Leon Alleyne and Winston Rollins.
Santos’ charge will be spearheaded by senior ‘Golden Jaguar’ Glenorvan Edmonds along wit the experienced Renault Fraser, Seon McKenzie, Jermaine Fraser and National under-20 custodian, O’Neil Heywood.
Tonight’s opening showdown brings together Camptown, who has been consistently taking runner positions and placing in the top four, aiming to break that jinx. Their opponents in Kitty Rangers, should not pose too much of a threat for them but one can never rule out the opposition.
Captain Orlando Gilgeous has to motivate his team to go all the way and as the main pillar in defence has to lead by example. Support for Gilgeous will come from veteran Troy ‘Bugs’ Prescod, Reshawn Sandiford, Kester Alleyne and striker Telson McKinnon.
Another double header will be contested on Sunday; Fruta Conquerors face Thomas United in opening play at 18:00hrs with feature play between Western Tigers and Uprising to follow.
The top prize of $300,000 is at stake for the champions with $150,000, $75,000 and $50,000 set aside for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams.
