The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has announced that the winners of this year’s WICB Regional Four-day Tournament will be awarded the George Headley/Everton Weekes Trophy.
The decision was taken to celebrate the outstanding careers of the two batting greats of West Indies cricket.
The year 2009 is the centenary of the birth of Headley, one of the greatest of West Indies batsmen and the first black man to captain the West Indies in a Test Match. It is also the 60 anniversary of Sir Everton Weekes’ remarkable feat of scoring five consecutive Test match hundreds.
The WICB outlined that although the competition has not attracted a sponsor in 2009, the Board, however, considers it imperative that the winning team be presented with a fitting trophy to mark this occasion.
