A U.S-based television producer is back in Guyana as he explores the possibility of building a string of eco-lodges that can be used for research and sports fishing.
Robert Arrington plays hosts to two adventure shows – Reel Adventures and Respect Outdoors – and it was his first visit to Guyana last year that prompted him to explore the possibility of building the eco-lodges in partnership with the Amerindian communities of Surama and Rewa.
Arrington, speaking at a press briefing yesterday, said the plan is to build five lodges at 20-mile intervals along the Burro Burro River, a river he reveres for its teeming fish population.
The project is being supported by Conservation International (Guyana), consultant Judy Karwacki stated. She said the project is exactly what Guyana needs as it pursues sustainable development.
Arrington said his goal is to develop a project that is effective, sustainable and profitable, and he foresees being able to start bringing tourists to Guyana within a year.
As a result of his previous visit to Guyana, Arrington has already started marketing the destination and has had nothing but positive responses.
The last time Arrington was in Guyana he came with Birding Adventures, and together five episodes were produced and aired on U.S television.
Three of the shows were on bird watching, while two were on sport fishing. The Guyana Sustainable Tourism Initiative (GSTI), which is funded by the U.S. Government, facilitated the productions.
“If you’re looking for a country to go and visit and literally be left with your jaw dropped in amazement of what this world looked like hundreds of years ago because they have conserved it and kept it in its natural beauty, look at Guyana,” Arrington said.
This time around, Arrington will be in the Rupununi for 12 days.
