Guyana’s preparations for the 2009 West Indies 50-overs under-15 cricket tournament here next month commenced yesterday with the first of three scheduled trial games.
Played in sultry conditions on a slow track and heavy outfield at the Police ground in Georgetown, Shaquille Williams’ X1 defeated Ricardo Adams’ X1 by four wickets.
Williams grabbed three wickets in quick succession as Adams’ X1 lost their last five wickets for 21 runs as only three batsmen reached double figures.
Williams finished with 3-12 with his off-spin and got support from Vijai Surujpaul (2-10) and Kamesh Yadram (2-16) as Adams’ X1 wee bundled out for 75 in 35 overs.
Surujpaul returned to hit an accomplished 29 and along with Mohan Ramdeen (39) added 50 for the fourth wicket before Chanderpaul Hemraj hit an attractive unbeaten 38 from 39 balls as Williams’ X1 finished on 114-6 in 35 overs in the rain affected game.
Sunil Rupee (21) and Visham Deolall, who thumped Yadram for two sixes in a 12-ball 17, were the only batsmen to get into double figures for Adams’ X1 in a disappointing batting display.
Mark Tyrell trapped Christopher Surat leg before for three at 10-1 before Shawn Perreira had Vishal Narayan caught behind for three at 19-2.
It was soon 20-3 when Adams edged Almando Doman to the keeper before he had scored while the left-handed Brandon Chanderpaul was removed by Williams as Adams’ X1 slipped to 28-4.
Chanderpaul, the son of West Indies player Shivnarine Chanderpaul, got off the mark with his only boundary and while he exhibited the type of temperament associated with his illustrious father, he struggled to get the ball away and took 51 balls to make eight after opening the batting.
Lively fast bowler Kareen Naughton followed up his five-wicket haul in the final under-15 round inter-county match for Demerara with another impressive performance and took 2-19 while left-arm spinner Adams had 2-10.
Karamchand Mohabali (0) had his off stump knocked out by Naughton at 1-0 while the talented Brian Sattaur (8) edged Naughton to the keeper to leave the score on 2-22.
Surujpaul and Ramdeen, the younger brother of former West Indies under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen, then batted confidently against some loose bowling before Ramdeen hit an Adams’ full toss to short mid-wicket at 72-3 before Surujpaul hit Adams to cover nine runs later.
Hemraj then batted positively to hit three fours and a six in his unbeaten 39-ball 38.
The second trial is scheduled for today at the DCC ground while the final trail will be played at the same venue on Thursday.
Guyana face Barbados in their opening match of the regional tournament on April 6.
