– prison officials concerned about info leak
Following revelations of brutal beatings of prisoners by prison officers at the Georgetown Prisons, officials of the prison service have transferred the inmates involved, to the Mazaruni facility.
The inmates had alleged that although they had sustained injuries as a result of the beatings, prison officials had refused to take them to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention.
Relatives of one of the injured prisoners told this newspaper that the injured had still not received the required medical attention.
According to reports, one of the inmates suffered a broken leg while others sustained various degrees on injuries including lacerations to several parts of their bodies.
A senior prison official had told this newspaper that the Georgetown Prison has two permanent Medex who are qualified to determine whether a prisoner requires treatment at the hospital or not.
This newspaper understands that the injured prisoners were transported from Georgetown and placed in a boat other than the normal Transport and Harbours Department vessel last Friday.
Relatives are of the view that the inmates were transferred with the aim of preventing them from ventilating their plight through the media.
Prison officials believe that the inmates have been using prohibited cellular phones to contact family members to inform them of the atrocities in the Georgetown Prison.
On several occasions, prison officials had raided the cells of inmates, searching for cell phones and other prohibited items.
Meanwhile, there are reports that a former prison warden who was recently charged for attempting to smuggle drugs into the Camp Street jail has been placed in the Prison Infirmary.
According to a source, this development is wrong since there are injured and sick inmates who are being held in their cells when they should be in the Infirmary in order to receive proper medical treatment.
