Bogus probation officer remanded for raping girl, 13

A man who allegedly raped a 13 year-old girl from Grove, East Bank Demerara, while purporting to be a Probation and Welfare Officer was yesterday remanded to prison after he made a court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson.
Randolph Pereira, the bogus probation officer, and a former police officer, on March 9, last, at Diamond, East Bank Demerara, is alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of 15. He was not required to plead.
He was represented by attorney at law Adrian Thompson who asked that bail be granted in a reasonable sum.
However Police Prosecutor Denise Griffith objected to bail on the grounds that the defendant is a former police officer and should have known better.
Thompson interjected and told the court that if his client goes to jail his life would definitely be at risk, because of his association with the Guyana Police Force.
Bail was denied and the accused is expected to make his next court appearance on Friday (March 20), at the Providence Magistrate’s Court.
The man reportedly entered the victim’s yard and told relatives that he needed to take the teen for counseling.
The mother of the child said that she immediately became suspicious since she knew of no reason why her daughter should need counseling.
The man became aggressive and told the family that he was taking the girl to the Diamond/Grove Police Station.
When her mother and her aunt objected and eventually demanded to accompany them to the station, the suspect informed them that they would be locked up too.
“We are poor people, and we get frighten after he tell we that we gon get lock up and have to pay fifty thousand dollars,” the victim’s mother said.
After much hesitation, the family allowed the teen to leave with the so-called probation officer. According to the teen, the man took her to an abandoned house in Grove and raped her.
The family alleged that following the man’s arrest, his relatives came to their home and offered them $150,000 to settle the matter.
