One year after she lapsed into a child-like state, doctors still can’t say why a mystery illness suddenly struck 31-year-old Leena Ramrattan after she delivered a baby boy.
Despite receiving treatment, relatives told Kaieteur News yesterday that Ramrattan, who resides at Diamond New Scheme, has shown no sign of recovery.
It is suspected that Ramrattan is suffering from Sheehan’s Syndrome, a rare ailment that strikes some women after pregnancy and affects their ability to produce some hormones.
But a relative told Kaieteur News that they were advised to discontinue the hormone treatment she was receiving after Ramrattan failed to show any improvement.
The mystery illness has caused Ramrattan to deteriorate to the extent that she seldom speaks, is severely malnourished, and cannot walk, bathe, or eat unaided.
Recently, she was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital for several days to receive intravenous fluids. “Some days she deh good, some days she don’t eat for three, four days,” the relative said, explaining that family members have fed Leena every nutritional supplement they can think of.
Relatives are to take her for further diagnosis this week.
Leena began showing signs of illness in February 2008, shortly after delivering a baby boy by Caesarean section at the Georgetown Hospital Public Corporation.
However, GPHC doctors were unable to diagnose her ailment and referred her to the hospital’s Psychiatric Clinic.
A psychiatrist at the clinic informed the relatives that Leena was suffering from depression and she was given medication.
However, she began to refuse her medication and her condition began to deteriorate.
