Led by a belligerent knock of 94 not out from Zamal Khan which included 8 fours and 5 towering maximums, Meten-Meer-Zorg (MMZ) registered an easy 74 runs win over Parika Rangers to capture the Barakat Brothers 20/20 finals yesterday, at the Meten-Meer-Zorg Community Centre ground.
Sent into bat after losing the toss, the home-team were in early trouble when they lost opener Troy Khan to the first ball of the innings, bowled off the inside edge for a duck off Dhamraj Champalall’s bowling.
Zamal Khan came next and together with Mahendra Nandkishore tore into Rangers bowling attack, smashing them to all parts of the small ground in a brutal display of batting.
Nandkishore was next to go when he was run out attempting a suicidal run only to be found short of his ground with his personal tally on 48. It contained 6 fours and 3 sixes.
Shawn McKay came next, but made just 2, before being bowled by Cushidial Persaud as MMZ looked for quick runs.
Trevor Benn, who also plays for Police, entered the fray and he looking positive, striking the ball with fierce power, but in his quest to hasten the score, he misread a slower delivery from Persaud and was bowled. He went for 10.
Avinash Shradanandan joined forces with Khan, who never put his feet on the brakes, but instead continued his lethal assault on Rangers bowlers, belting boundaries after boundaries knotted with a few sixes, but the former finally offered a catch to the man at extra cover off Jagmohan Singh’s bowling. He made 17 runs.
With the overs running out, MMZ stepped up their attack, especially Khan, who was closing in on a century. He watched as Seon Alleyne (2) fell via the run out route, while Vinod Rajkumar (7) followed him shortly after, bowled by Champalall.
Orville Black came next with less than 2 overs remaining and all eyes were glued to Khan.
In the final over, in his eagerness to reach the coveted landmark, he lost his rhythm and missed a few deliveries and even offered a leg bye to Black, leaving him high and dry six runs short of what would have been a well deserved century.
Champalall was the pick of the bowlers grabbing 2-28 off 3 overs, while Persaud had 2-42 from 4 and Singh 1-15 off 2.
In their turn at the crease, Rangers were pegged back by some tight bowling by MMZ and the asking rate continued to climb to over 7 runs per over at one stage.
They lost wickets at regular intervals and no pair managed to engage in a meaningful partnership.
Rajin Rahaman (6) fell to Nandkishore, while Champalall (0) and S. Latchana (0) failed to trouble the scorers.
Safraz Karim (18) stayed long enough with Azad Azeez (49 not out) to give the total some respectability, but his departure saw another collapse.
Rehaza Karim (1) and Rovin Sasenarine (8) fell in quick succession, while Persaud departed after scoring just 10, leaving Asif Safee (14 not out) with Azeez when the overs expired.
Rajkumar took 3-26 off 4 overs; Shradanandan picked up 2-35 from 4, while there was one wicket apiece for Benn and Nandkishore.
Khan was later named Man-of-the-Match and he received $10,000 plus a trophy.
He was also given a special prize for hitting the highest score in the competition.
Other players receiving cash prizes and trophies were Best bowling figures Bhesham Dhanraj (Windsor Forest), who took 5-10; Raul Hoyte (Crane), who took a hat-trick; Best bowler Trevor Benn and Best Batsman Seenauth Bissessar.
Zeeburg won the third place prize of $25,000 and a trophy, while Crane ended fourth and they took home $15,000 and a trophy.
The winning team collected $100,000 and a trophy, while the runner-up carted off $50,000 and a trophy.
The tournament was sponsored by Zam and Feroze Barakat.
