Minibus operators who ply Route 44 (Georgetown/Mahaica) are objecting to the absence of a proper minibus park where they can load passengers, just like every other zoned minibus route working along the city routes.
Many of the minibuses working the 44 Route do not go all the way to Mahaica, but travel to Victoria, Buxton and Ann’s Grove.
The operators who travel to these locations have said that the minibus park which has been allotted to them, just off of the corners of Longden and Commerce Streets, is extremely small. These operators estimate that approximately 20 minibuses can park in this area.
This is a stark juxtaposition to the more than 200 minibuses that work this zone.
Additionally, the operators allege that in the early hours of the morning, vendors who sell goods in the arcade bring their trucks and cars, and park in their (Route 44 operators) minibus park, making it extremely difficult to load passengers.
More so, the minibus operators have said that within their park there is a ‘No Parking’ sign.
Due to these constraints, many of the minibuses drive up, and load their passengers right on the corners of Longden and Commerce Streets. Loading minibuses outside the designated parks is illegal, and is termed ‘running the hot plate.’
Operators who are found ‘running the hot plate’ are charged with obstructing traffic.
Even though the minibus operators have said that they know ‘running the hot plate’ is illegal, they insist that it is necessary, since all of the Route 44 minibuses cannot hold in the park designated to them.
“We can’t hold in there; we gotta come out here and load,” said one of the operators.
