…no hand held phones for drivers from tomorrow
From tomorrow, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) will be intensifying operations to enforce the laws that govern the playing of music in public transportation vehicles while on a journey or parked on the roadway; the use of hand-held mobile phones while driving motor vehicles; the placing of markings/drawings on mini-buses in contravention of the road service license; and the fraudulent imitating of identification marks on motor vehicles (number plates) or certificate of registration.
All operators of public transportation were given until today to remove all markings from their vehicles, which are not approved by the prescribed authority.
The traffic department of the police force recently embarked on the campaign for the removal of all markings, following an amendment to Clause 14 of the Road Service License for minibuses and other means of public transportation.
The police had said that in furtherance of the new traffic management plan and efforts to deal with the placing of drawings and slogans on minibuses, which are in some instances of a lewd nature and which are of concern, an amendment has been made to ensure that “No writing, marking, drawing or other material shall be placed on a motor vehicle except those approved by the Prescribed Authority.”
In addition, the amended clause now states that materials approved by the Prescribed Authority will include the prescribed colour code and number, registration number, zone, seating capacity and destination.
Traffic Chief, Neil Semple told Kaieteur News, recently, that operators of minibuses and other forms of public transportation would not be issued with their road service license if they do not comply with the new measure.
He also warned owners of private vehicles that they should not put on unspecified markings on their vehicles since these are not in keeping with what is on their registrations.
