Dear Editor,
Permit me the opportunity to highlight one aspect of the richness in Guyana’s sporting culture in the discipline of basketball.
Although Guyana males never won a senior Caricom Basketball Championship, the National Team have the record of brothers playing in the same tournament.
The Brusche brothers Michael and Clifton joined Melroy and Merton Fitzalbert as part of Guyana’s delegation that participated at the Central American Basketball championship in the Dominican Republic in 1975.
Another brother James also represented the National Team from 1981 to 1988. The feat was emulated at the 1996 Caricom Championship in Trinidad & Tobago when the Mohans and Lonckes represented the Land of Many Waters; Lugard and Orin Mohan, Rawlwin and Lancelot Loncke. Guyana again had the honour of having two sets of siblings at the Caribbean Confederation Championship in Puerto Rico 2007; Antrice and Gordon Klaiber, Michael and Kevon Creppy.
Other brothers who represented Guyana but not in the same tournament are Deryck and Carl Spence, Ossie, Stanley and James Devonish. Sisters Urani and Rushelle Browne played together at the 1996 triumphant championship in Trinidad also Brentnol and Brandice Carmicheal were siblings who also represented Guyana.
