Dear Editor,
The US State Department report on Guyana, besides setting a plethora of demerit on the country, states clearly and categorically that ‘the charges against former army officer Oliver Hinckson were politically motivated’.
This is a profound and telling pronouncement and one to which the relevant police, and judicial authorities and prosecuting Joint Services must pay heed. Trumped up allegations against citizens do not speak well of a regime’s much touted adherence to the multiple tenets of democracy. Repression of civil liberties and an aversion to criticism are certainly not any of these tenets.
And further I say not except to thank all the beautiful souls — the wonderful women of the nation here and overseas — who stepped out and protested against the victimization heaped upon me. To those who offered up prayers to the Almighty, remember good will always overcome evil.
I feel it is benefiting and incumbent upon me to re-emphasise my strong belief that it is the women only who stand between us all and the devil. Once again thank you from the bottom of my heart. I love you all.
Oliver Hinckson
