Guyana was once again represented at Barbados’ premiere show “Agro-Fest” recently and reports are that the Guyana Marketing Stall (GMC) made an even bigger impact this year.
A news release from the Guyana Consulate in the island said that the increased contacts with importers and the general “Bajan” public underscored the continued marketing thrust of Guyana’s fruits and vegetables on the Barbados and Caribbean market and the overall good trading and other relations among the countries.
Representing the GMC was Marketing Officer Mr. Asraf Narine who described the participation as “very beneficial”. Mr. Narine said that the Corporation’s stall displayed a wide variety of the country’s fruits and vegetables as well as a good selection of processed items in tins and bottles.
Crabwood soaps and oils were among other items on display as well, and cocoa and coffee products and cassava bread. In addition to briefing ordinary Bajans who came to the booth, Mr. Narine had informal discussions with potential importers and existing ones. He also had a brief talk with Mr. Phillip Williams, the Executive Director of the Barbados-based Caribbean Export entity, which assists CARICOM countries in improving and expanding exporting capability. There were several inquiries about investing in Guyana. Hundreds of GMC pamphlets and the booklet “Grow More Food: Opportunities and Challenges of Rise in Global Food Prices” were handed out. The GMC participation as assisted by the Ministry of Agriculture in Guyana.
“I found the Bajans most receptive to the Guyanese products. The only words of friendly criticism was that the stall should be bigger next time and that there wasn’t enough cassava bread because this is fondly remembered by older Barbadians,” Narine said.
“Guyana will continue to provide fruits and vegetables and processed items on the Barbadian market but we also commend the Barbadian authorities for mounting yet another successful Agro-Fest,” he added. “This working together for mutual benefit bodes well for continued good and friendly trading and other relations between Guyana and Barbados, ” said Honorary Consul Norman Faria, who was at the stall most of the three day event.
A local Guyanese caterer also provided authentic Guyanese food for the Caribbean Food Restaurant at the show.
The activity was sponsored by Inter American Institute for Co-operation in Agriculture.
