The maintenance team at the Demerara Harbour Bridge (DHB) considerably slowed traffic crossing the bridge yesterday morning as they set to work repairing a connecting end-post, which had broken after years of wear and tear.
The connecting end-post broke at approximately 7:30 hours yesterday morning, and the staffers of the DHB maintenance crew effected emergency repairs, supposedly to hold it together until there is a replacement.
The connecting end-post is one of the mechanisms that link one span of the DHB to another.
The replacement of the end-post is scheduled to take place at approximately 5:30 hours this morning, when the DHB would be closed to road traffic to facilitate the crossing of marine vessels.
Despite the necessity of repairs on the DHB, many commuters have expressed extreme displeasure at the constant delays the repair work has caused. They complained that almost every day there is some sort of hold-up. New deck plates are installed, and there is almost always some other type of repair conducted.
“If they had taken proper care of the bridge before, then they would not need to do such intense repairs,” said one commuter.
However, the management of the bridge has noted the severity of the need for the deck plates to be replaced. “Before, almost every month we would hear about a tyre being punctured or some other problem commuters were having, stemming from the faulty deck plates. “So far we have not had any problems for this year, and that is a good thing,” said a source close to the management of the DHB.
The deck replacement exercise is apparently going on as planned, and it is expected that the exercise will be completed on schedule.
The DHB has outlived its lifetime by approximately 15 years, although the Government moved to extend its life, and installed pontoons and replaced sections of the surface.
At present a more permanent structure is being contemplated.
