A 36-year-old gold miner perished on Thursday after setting himself and a shop alight at Arimu Backdam, Cuyuni.
Police said that Roy Rodrigues, of East Ruimveldt Housing Scheme, torched his sister’s shop following an altercation with his sibling.
According to reports, Rodrigues went to the shop at around 23:30 hrs on Wednesday and asked his sister for two pennyweights of gold.
However, the sister refused, and the miner then returned to the premises at around 01:30 hrs on Thursday.
Police said that he stood in the shop, soaked himself with gasolene and then set himself alight.
Police said that Rodrigues sustained severe burns to the head and chest, while the shop was destroyed.
According to the police, because of transportation difficulties, the injured miner arrived at the Bartica Hospital about nine hours after, and succumbed before he could have received medical treatment.
Rodrigues’s body has been brought to the city.
