Most of the minibus parks in Georgetown are becoming a dangerous territory for passengers going home in the nights.
Over the past few weeks, drivers, conductors and even passengers have complained of being robbed at the parks, and sometimes even while they are in the minibus.
Kaieteur News understands that the majority of the robberies occur at the route 32 bus parks, as passengers’ cell phones and purses are snatched from them by petty thieves who lurk around the bus parks and pose as ‘limers’ or ‘touts.’
This newspaper was told that on one occasion, a passenger in the front seat of a route 32 minibus was talking on her cell phone, and as the bus was about to drive off from the park, a neatly dressed man snatched the cell phone from her ears and ran away with it even before the woman could yell for help.
Drivers said that this is the case most of the time, as the robbers ‘eye up’ those with fancy cell phones, and pounce on them when the bus is about to leave.
On another occasion, a school girl was robbed in another route 32 minibus. It was noted that the young woman was sitting in the conductor seat of the bus, when a boy in his teens came and sat next to her.
The girl had her phone in her hands, and suddenly the young man sitting next to her snatched her cell phone from her and ran out of the bus.
According to the drivers, although there has been an increase in police personnel on the minibus parks, they are of no help. By the time they get to the scene, the robbers are long gone.
Other bus parks in Georgetown have also reported similar cases.
Currently, before passengers enter a route 32 minibus, the conductors inform them to put away their cell phones, as there are phone snatchers lurking around.
